Amerigroup Corp.'s presence had a direct economic impact of $249 million on Hampton Roads last year, an amount that increased 25 percent from three years earlier, according to a study the Virginia Beach-based company commissioned. Its biggest economic contribution took the form of employee salaries and benefits, which totaled $133.31 million in 2008. Total employee compensation last year was up 50 percent from the 2005 amount, the study said. The average salary last year was $59,208, up 15 percent from three years earlier.
